Costume Rethink: Varying Styles

While talking to our teachers, as well as looking over our storyboard, we began to notice that it is harder for the audience to be able to understand the two different characters we were presenting. Therefore, we decided to look at costumes with the opposite connotations and effect. We chose to look at slimmer, more vibrant dresses to present a lack of innocence and take away that feeling of purity and youth seen in our more innocent character. We then began to look at costumes that would match this:

This costume is effectively a contrast to the other white dress. The slim, bodycon fit works to present something different from an innocent young girl, and the obvious pattern creates a more detailed and distinctive look. We felt that this dress had a simple but effective contrast, and therefore could have a similar effect on the audience. With makeup and jewellery, this costume could present a more matured, sophisticated and self-aware character, that would work to present a complete difference to the former character.

This costume follows the vibrant and colourful vibe we were looking for, but is still seemingly plain. Its colour and length contrasts the childish and innocent look we wanted, however it is not a distinctive change and cannot easily be seen. Had the dress been tighter and patterned, it definitely would have been what we were looking for.

This costume includes the pattern and short style that we are looking for. It is very unique and would work well to show the difference between the state of the two characters. A particular drawback of this costume as that it has a very similar shape to the original white dress we chose, which could suggest that it is harder to see a complete contrast between the two characters. However, we will keep this dress in consideration when we decide.

Costume: Decision

We ultimately decided that the first dress would be the most effective in portraying a contrasting character, due to its shape and pattern. We felt it would look the best in our video, and would suit our actress the best too.
