Music Video Analysis: Firework
This video is a good example of a Narrative story. It follows a dual character plot, with each person having their own story to tell, to ultimately reach the same conclusion. Visually, Perry creates the idea of bravery and being bigger than the problems that overpower us. Fireworks are used in Editing to metaphorically represent the human race as indestructible and in control. The lyrics parallel this and help to spread the message that are shown in the video. The lyrics match the firework metaphor:
Do you know that there's still a chance for you,
'Cause there's a spark in you,
You just gotta ignite the light,
And let it shine
This helps to reiterate how people shouldn't give up and keep fighting regardless of how weak or helpless they may feel. The video shows this not only through the edited fireworks, but by the Mise en Scene used. Costume, lighting and facial expressions keep the idea of helplessness. Costume and Hair and Make Up, in the scenes involving a Cancer patient help to reiterate the situation she is in and attract ideas of suffering and pain. Furthermore, the scenes with Low-Key Lighting, for example the scenes of a young boy cuddling his sister to calm her down as their parents fight, help to create an idea as to how he is feeling and the mood he is in. His facial expression is one of rage but also fear, and the lighting helps to set the atmosphere and emphasise the boy's emotions.
The fact that the artist is not the main focus within the video helps to suggest that she wants to keep the focus on the dual plotlines and the moral behind the song. Overall, the moral of the video, lyrics and artist all appear to match up and create a story that flows and works to spread a specific message.
