Camera Angles: Research
In order to achieve the best response from our video, and to keep to the conventions of a good video, I decided to look at some common camera angles seen in music videos, in order to determine those that are most commonly seen.
1. Wide Shot
This angle usually includes more of a background or location than an object, meaning the object is further away. It is used most commonly to relate an object to its surroundings, or to suggest particular emotions such as isolation. It's one of the most frequently seen shots in music videos.
Mid Shot
This angle is probably the most commonly used in music videos. It shows the subject, usually from the shoulders upwards, and also allows the audience to notice and take in the location or surroundings the object is in. It can be seen as a fairly neutral shot, and the effectiveness of it comes from the choices of other factors such as Mise En Scene
Close Up Shot
This type of shot is usually a direct focus on an object, with it filling the screen or a larger part of it. This shot is used most commonly to allow the audience to see an object clearer, as well, in terms of music videos, to present emotions. In the genre of Pop, Close Up Shots are used the most frequently, as they create a connection between the artist and the audience and allows the artist to be more distinct and recognised.
Low Angled
This shot is filmed in a position below the object, allowing for an object to be looking down at the camera. This is used in some music videos to establish authority, as they are presented as bigger than the audience, but they are not frequently seen.
High Angled
This angle is used in a contrasting way to the Low Angled shot, with this one facing downwards and an artist looking up. Although this isn't frequently used, it can make the audience feel more powerful and make the artist look and be presented as smaller.
Aerial (Birds Eye View)
This angle is used fairly frequently in music videos, usually to present a subject as small in relation to their surroundings. Otherwise, the shot is used to be representative of an eye in the video, looking down at someone.
